ROAD TRIP FINALE

The last day of our car rental had arrived.
We didn't need to be in Reykjavik until 2pm, so we just meandered & took our time heading south.
Because we had gone through the 6 km tunnel under Hvalfjordur (the fjord north of Reykjavik) the day before, today we were going to go AROUND the fjord & just lap up all that gorgeous scenery one last time, before spending the next few days surrounded by buildings.

Partway along the route is a waterfall that happens to be #2 in the Top 10 list; Glymur.  It would seem rude to sail past without having a look..... even if it meant driving down yet another of those revolting unsealed gravel roads...so off we went.
When we arrived, we were informed that not only is the walk in to see the waterfall a 'hike' as opposed to a 'walk', but it also involved a rough track & the need to cross a stream via a felled tree trunk! We knew we couldn't do the hike, because we weren't prepared for it, nor did we have time (nor were we keen on that whole 'walking across a log' thing!!).  Therefore, we decided we'd just head down the track as far as we felt we wanted to!!
We didn't go far. One look at the sky & we could see that rain was very close.
We had walked far enough though to enjoy the masses of lupin colouring the landscape in every direction.

When we turned back we saw an excellent example of a U shaped valley!

Back in the car & further around the fjord, we had a fantastic view out over the area where first the British & then the US Navy had been based during WW2.  This was a recreational area for the crews as well as supplies, so a whole community was built here, including a cinema.  After they left, it was all blown up.

Just before Reykjavik we stopped on a small peninsula to try & get a view of the city before entering it.  The view wasn't that great, BUT... we did manage to get this photo of a Wimbrel , a bird that we have heard everywhere we've ventured since Seydisfjordur.  It was a lovely way to end our road trip.
We were so pleased that we had chosen to spend the two weeks the way we had.  Even though we had had to sacrifice some areas over others (we knew we wouldn't be able to see everything), there were absolutely no regrets.  A very good way to end a road trip.
