Today we were bound for the ancient city of Trondheim where we would say goodbye to our trusty steed (the car we have grown rather attached to & wished we could squeeze it into our luggage & take home).... before continuing North again.
Once again we were blessed with weather that highlighted what a stunning landscape we were driving through. When we eventually left the company of the fjord, we spent a lot of time travelling through rural countryside.
Trying to take photographs out of the window is not a skill I am very good at, but I did manage to get ONE of my attempts to capture a bell tower on a barn... relatively in focus! Some of the hoods on these towers were quite decorative. The barns themselves were wonderful structures with stone foundations & wooden body, painted either the beautiful russet red that looks majestic in the landscape, or the dark brown-black that seems to be another favourite. We wondered whether the bells were rung in times of danger or when help was needed, especially in winter.
In the township of Oppdal we found a WONDERFUL bakery, where we would have quite happily spent a small fortune, if there had been any feasible way of getting it all back to Australia!! Speaking of home, we were very amused to see that they sold Bundaberg soft drinks. When we commented on them, the waitress said how popular they are here!!
Before returning to the car we found the ultimate yarn bombing challenge! What a cosy little ride this would be!
I was very excited to FINALLY get this photo! We were in Elk country (moose to ye of North American orientation!). Naturally I then started scanning the tree line for potential Elk-like suspects, but they were wise to stay away from the busy road today. A fox made a very brief appearance earlier in our drive though, which got me very excited!
There were a lot of road works on the outskirts of Trondheim, which put the GPS in a fizz, so we had all our concentration honed in on where we should be going. Eventually we found the car hire place & said goodbye to our Toyota Yaris hybrid...3/4 of tank of petrol for 1000 km isn't bad!
Arriving at our Trondheim Hotel, I had the most wonderful thing imaginable waiting for me...
....a kettle AND an English breakfast teabag! Oh joy, oh bliss! Tomorrow morning will start SOOOOO much better now!
It's the small things that matter!!!!
This lovely Hotel has some truly thoughtful rituals, like help-yourself afternoon tea, where we could make our own waffles! That was an opportunity we were NOT going to pass up! Yum!
The weather forecast for tomorrow is for cloud & low temperatures, so we thought we'd make the most of the remaining sunlight & stretch the legs around Trondheim.
It was the perfect time to capture the colourful warehouses & wharves that line the Nidelva River.
We also thought we'd stroll around the outside of the Nidarosdomen (Cathedral), the site where pilgrims would come & pay their respects at the grave of Olav The Holy.
The west front has a wonderful range of statues & gargoyles. We noticed a bit of a theme happening, take a look at these...
By this stage the wind had really started foretelling that a temperature change was nigh, so we started to head back via the textile Museum & fish market. Both on our list for tomorrow's adventures.
As we were walking along we found another wonderful pot hole cover! Great end to a fabulous walk.
